Proposed Needs

Highway Safety

Atypical nature of this interchange (northbound and southbound I-81 through traffic must shift left) result in highway safety implications.

The existing mainline I-78 routinely experiences travel delay in the westbound direction, which contributes to operational and safety issues.

Land Use and Access

Over the past 5 years, several warehouses have been constructed in the vicinity of the I-78/I-81 Split. Additional warehouse and distribution facility construction is anticipated.

Highway Infrastructure

The existing structures on existing I-81 and I-78 corridor were constructed in the 1960s and are approaching the end of their serviceable life span.  The existing pavement was reconstructed in the 1990’s and 2000’s and ride quality is beginning to degrade.
