Lack of capacity at ramp intersections. Specifically, at Exit 29 short ramps and merge areas result in highway safety implications.
The existing mainline I-81 routinely experiences travel delay from Exit 24 to Exit 29, which contributes to operational and safety issues.
Land Use and Access
Industrial and commercial development will continue in the Greater Shippensburg Area to meet increased logistics demand along the I-81 corridor. This will increase traffic volumes at Exits 24 and 29.
The existing pavement and structures along several segments of existing I-81 corridor were constructed in the 1960s and are approaching the end of their serviceable life span.
